Kenyan startup builds app to spot fake documents

mverifiedA Kenyan startup has built a mobile and web-based app to identify fake car log books and other documents.

The app, called mVerified, works by checking document credentials against records stored by Kenyan governmental agencies. Documents without corresponding official records are flagged up as potential counterfeits.

"Most people have to go through the manual system, that includes visiting government offices or educational institutions, just to verify title deeds, diplomas and certificates, something that takes a lot of time and money," Patrick Mutahi, CEO and co-founder at Mobilab, told HumanIPO.

The app is free to download but Mobilab charges $7 for each verification request. Mutahi thinks the app justifies the cost by eliminating the need to visit government agencies in person. The system went live a few months ago.

So far Mobilab has invested close to $5,000 and is seeking $100,000 to expand overseas. The company is looking for investors or strategic partners to help finance its expansion plans.
