Brief: UK MHRA seizes 22,000 fake condoms
Staff reporter, 10-Jun-2016
The UK drugs regulator has uncovered thousands of counterfeit condoms and diagnostic kits at a property in Castleford, West Yorkshire.
The raid - which was part of the international Pangea IX operation - resulted in the seizure of 22,000 condoms sourced from China - including Durex branded products - and 7,000 illegal syphilis testing strips.
The Medicines and Healthcare Products regulatory Agency (MHRA) said the condoms could fail to protect against pregnancy or sexually-transmitted infections, while the illegal testing kits could result in false negative or false positive results, with potentially dire consequences.
