Egypt recalls falsified Betadine antiseptic

The Egyptian Drug Authority has recalled packs of Betadine brand antiseptic after an investigation revealed the product to be counterfeit.

The 120ml bottles of disinfectant – batch numbers P9809021 and P0909005 – were not genuine but were presented in original outer packaging produced by Nile Company on behalf of Betadine’s manufacturer Mundipharma, according to a statement issued by the regulator. The producer requested the recall.

The adulterated packages can be identified from inner packaging, which differs from the genuine Betadine product in a number of aspects, according to an alkhaleejtoday.co article. For example, the genuine product as no prominent welding line at the bottom of the inner packaging, there is a large ‘p’ letter at the bottom, it says.
