P&G sues UK discount store for stocking fake goods
Phil Taylor, 28-Feb-2016
Procter & Gamble is suing UK retailer Poundstretcher claiming it has been stocking counterfeits of its shampoo and washing powder brands.
The lawsuit - against Poundstretcher and suppliers Home and Beauty and J&S - relates to activities at the three companies in 2013 and 2014, according to a Sunday Times report.
The case shines a spotlight on the retail supply chain in the UK, and if the claims are supported suggests consumers may be at risk of purchasing shoddy and potentially hazardous products when shopping at discount stores.
While J&S does not admit the Head & Shoulders shampoo and Ariel washing powder cited in the case were counterfeit, a submitted defence indicates that the market in 2013 was "awash" with fake products. P&G says its own testing of the products determined they were counterfeit.
The suit is seeking damages and importantly is demanding that the defendants provide details of the source of the disputed shampoo and detergent.
