Americas seeing sharp rise in cargo theft
Staff reporter, 12-Feb-2010
Cargo theft rates have increased dramatically in the Americas between January and December 2009, according to the latest data from Freightwatch International, while in Europe and Asia rates have remained largely constant or in some cases have decreased.
The indications are that increased aggressiveness by cargo thieves is the primary reason for the soaring rates in the Americas, while decreases in shipping and inconsistent reporting appear to impact the statistics in Europe and Asia.
Pharmaceuticals are among the most sought-after targets, in addition to high-value apparel and electronic goods, according to the report, which is available to download here. Mexico, Argentina and Brazil have become particular hot spot for pharma thefts which are often armed.
"The risk shippers face can change dramatically from region to region," stated Barry Conlon, FreightWatch's chief executive.
"It is imperative that corporations understand the global as well as local risks, and take proactive measures to keep in-transit cargo secure."
