There are reports of counterfeit copies of Samsung’s top-tier solid state drives (SSDs) being sold on online marketplaces, according to the guru3d.com website.
The site notes that a customer in China discovered a fake Samsung 980 Pro SSD being sold on Xianyu, the second-hand market operated by Alibaba’s Taobao platform, that was such a close copy of the genuine article that it was able to fool Samsung's Magician software designed to help owners manage their SSDs.
guru3d.com notes that the knock-off used controller and NAND flash devices with inferior performance to the genuine drives. The copycat versions were being sold for 880 yuan (around $128) and appeared to be shipped in genuine Samsung packaging.
