Counterfeit tyres killing drivers in Nigeria

Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has warned that counterfeit tyres are a major cause of deaths on the road along with speeding and criminal activity like robbery on the highways.

That’s the view of FRSC Corps Marshal Dauda Ali Biu who repeatedly warned about the dangers of using repurposed, expired or counterfeit tyres, and also cautioned motorists not to drink or drive at night if possible, as criminals tend to operate in the hours of darkness, according to a report in the Tribune newspaper.

When purchasing tyres, consumers should check if the brand or other details are misspelled or missing, whether paperwork or packaging for the tyre is present, the colour of the tyres seems to match images of genuine products online, they feel flimsy, or the seller is in an unusual location.
