EU backs African circular economy scheme with €40m

The EU has agreed to provide €40m ($44m) in funding to help countries in the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) transition to a circular economy.

The SWITCH to Circular Economy (SWITCH-2-CE) programme, which will also receive strategic support from the EU, is aimed at promoting "sustainability, green, circular and digital transformation" of the plastics, textiles and electronics sectors.

It focuses on skills development and job creation, as well as: promoting sustainable consumption and production practices, sustainable business models and eco-friendly technologies; enhancing policy frameworks and regulatory environments to incentivise green investments and innovation; and strengthening the capacity of government and civil organisations to build sustainability into their activities.

SWITCH-2-CE will contribute to reverse environmental degradation and recover natural capital, improve resource efficiency and reduce waste and pollution," said the EU.
