Expert proposes anti-counterfeit push to quell North Korea
Nick Taylor, 03-Apr-2013
A nuclear proliferation expert has called on the US and its allies to cut off counterfeiting by North Korea to pressure the regime.
North Korea further agitated the West this week by saying it will restart its main atomic complex, supposedly to ease its electricity shortage. The news added to tensions that have built steadily in the weeks since North Korea performed a nuclear test.
In response to the test, the United Nation tightened sanctions, but North Korea has continued on regardless. With North Korea believed to derive income from counterfeiting, some are calling for the US and allies to make a more concerted effort to cut off this revenue stream.
Talking to PolitiFact, Henry Sokolski, executive director of the Nonproliferation Policy Education Center, said this is the best way to deal with the "lunatic regime." Sokolski worked under the first Bush administration as a Pentagon expert in nuclear proliferation.
