Malicious Microsoft knockoffs used to defraud consumers

Counterfeit versions of Microsoft software, including Office, are being used by criminals to gain access to purchasers computers and render them vulnerable to fraud attacks.

A report from Sky News says that the fake products – in convincing packaging that includes an engraved USB drive and what looks like a legitimate product key – actually install malicious software that encourages purchasers to call a fake support line and give remote access to a scammer.

A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed to Sky News that the USB and the packaging is counterfeit, and that the company has seen examples of such products being used to defraud victims before. The company has also previously seen examples of new computers being sold loaded with counterfeit versions of its software as well as malware.
