Irish customs nab counterfeit wine in Cork

Revenue officers in Ireland have seized a record haul of counterfeit wine at the Tivoli Container Terminal in Cork.

The 24,750-litre shipment – equivalent to around 33,000 bottles with an estimated value of more than €300,000 – was sent in an unaccompanied container to Ireland from the Netherlands and represents a loss to the Irish treasury of approximately €161,500 in dodged excise duties.

“This seizure is part of…ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illicit alcohol products in the shadow economy,” said the Revenue in a statement, adding that investigations into the shipment is continuing.
