Hong Kong Customs says it has seized about 600,000 suspected illicit cigarettes with an estimated market value of HK$1.6m ($200,000) in the Kwai Chung area.
The haul, with a duty potential of about $1.2m.was uncovered during an anti-illicit cigarette operation that involved inspection of a cargo consignment at a logistics site. Two 46-year-old men were arrested and an investigation is ongoing.
Under Hong Kong law smuggling carries a maximum potential fine of HK$2m and imprisonment for seven years, while possession of, selling or buying illicit cigarettes can lead to fines of up to HK$1m and imprisonment for two years.
