Avery Dennison unveils anti-counterfeit film

Label specialist Avery Dennison has launched an anti-counterfeiting technology - called Sharp Tear - that enables serial numbers to be read directly through a label.
The new line is designed for tamper-evident applications, where an easy tear is required in the label, and provides "an extra layer of product security for pharmaceutical brands," according to the company.
Sharp Tear takes the form of a thin co-extruded polymer film that provides a seal which remains intact during normal handling, but which tears easily in one direction if attempts are made to open the package.
The product is available in an opaque white or clear format and can be printed by all conventional roll label technologies including offset litho, UV letterpress and UV flexo. Avery Dennison notes it can either mask unwanted packaging information or allow important product details to be visible through the label
"Counterfeiting has become a very significant threat to all pharma brands," said Hans Eichenwald, senior product manager Specialty Segments at Avery Dennison.
"Sharp Tear offers a rapid and reliable way to secure both product safety and brand reputation without impacting productivity or product margins," he added.
