Datalogic scanner 'ready for 2D data matrix adoption'

datalogic scannerDatalogic Scanning has developed a 2D matrix code reader - the Magellan 1000i imager - which it says has been designed specifically for use in pharmacies.

The imager can read multiple 1D and 2D codes in a single presentation, or scanning motion. Using a unique combination of software and firmware, it can sort and relay data contained in the code in a predefined order, says the firm.

2D data matrix systems have already been set up on a national level in countries like Italy, Belgium and Spain and in France the data matrix system will become obligatory by 2011.

The new data matrix codes contain more data than existing CIP codes used in France, for example, including the AMM (authorisation to market) code, batch number and expiration date. The codes are already being printed on many medicine and drug packages in Europe to "smooth and ease the transition from the current barcode system," according to Datalogic.

"Data matrix codes ensure reliable traceability throughout the supply chain to the final point-of-sale (POS) in the pharmacy," said the firm.

"The results are increased safety, security and reliability in the  distribution of pharmaceutical drugs and medicines for the consumer."

The European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (EFPIA) is launching a pilot study to test the 2D data-matrix barcoding system for medicines. A €1m budget has been allocated for the pilot.
