MetatoneMore than 22,000 bottles of a vitamin tonic sold by Chefaro UK Ltd under the Metatone brandname have been recalled after traces of petrol were found in the 300ml bottles.

Metatone is a general sale list (GSL) product, meaning that it can be sold over-the-counter in any retail outlet in the UK. It contains a number of vitamins and is used to restore health and vitality after illnesses such as cold and flu.

There have been no reports of adverse reactions associated with the affected batch - number 112 - which may even have a smell of petrol, according to Chefaro.

"If people have the affected medicine at home, they are advised to stop using it, return it to the retailer where they purchased the product and request it to be replaced with another Metatone Tonic from the range, or a full refund," said the firm in a press statement.

Chefaro said it thought the petrol was a contaminant of the ethanol alcohol that is used in the manufacturing process. The product is made by a contract manufacturer, and Chefaro is carrying out an investigation to try to establish the source of the contamination.
