SICK launches code reader for track-and-trace applications

SICK Lector 620Sensor specialist SICK AG of Germany has launched a new fix-mount code reader for track and trace applications called the Lector 620, which it claims caters for the "considerably different ... demands on identification technology" between industries.

The overall objective was to develop a sensor that can be implemented in the production line easily, in a number of formats to suit different applications. It is around two-thirds smaller than other 2D code readers and offers real-time decoding of images with a frequency of 60 Hz, fast enough for the speeds at which pharmaceutical packaging lines operate.

"This improves decoding performance and thus timely detection and elimination of reading problems," said a company spokesman. The reader also features some additional features designed to make it easier to install, including a laser-alignment system that makes it easier for technicians to mount it in the correct position, and reposition it in the event of line maintenance.

The new device has been launched at a time when Europe and other countries around the world are poised to go down a path of requiring 2D datamatrix coding for pharmaceuticals along with safety features and tamper-evident seals in order to protect patients against counterfeited medicines.

"If you have a need to detect safety features, seals or serialised 2D datamatrix codes it is important that you use high-performing and reliable systems," according to SICK.

"You can implement the most powerful track-and-trace software, but when your reader does not read the 2D codes ... this will have a negative influence on the productivity of your packaging line."

The Lector series comes in an 'Eco' variant, a 'Standard' device for rapid implementation of universal applications, a 'High Speed' variant for applications such as packaging or document handling, and another 'DPM' configuration for markings applied directly.
