US Coast Guard warns of fake fire extinguishers

The US Coast Guard has warned fake versions of the portable fire extinguishers it approves for use are in circulation.
Detection of counterfeit US Coast Guard-approved extinguishers from Amerex and Buckeye Fire Equipment prompted a safety alert to boat owners. The Coast Guard has unconfirmed reports of fake Badger fire extinguishers too.
Everyone is advised to check for signs their equipment is counterfeit. The fake fire extinguishers may have duplicate serial numbers and lack security markings on the label. Other distinguishing marks include the construction of the base, the handle and pressure gauge.
Some of these differences threaten the functioning of the extinguishers. Pressure gauges might give false readings and the pressure cylinder lacks Department of Transportation approval. Also, they might contain something other than a fire extinguishing agent.
The US Coast Guard is unsure of the fake extinguishers can put out fires. Anyone who suspects they have a counterfeit fire extinguisher should contact the Coast Guard with a description of the product.
